Optional
Downtown Juneau is easy to explore on foot. Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls need transport, but you can still get there independently by public bus, taxi or shuttle.
Getting from the ship
To Mendenhall Glacier
Ships tie up alongside on the downtown waterfront, and the walk into town starts at the gangway. Juneau has more than one cruise berth, so check the ship's daily programme for which one you have.

Exploring Juneau, Alaska
Simplest approach
Walk for downtown — nothing needs arranging. Arrange transport for Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls; that is the one trip here worth planning.
No transport needed
Downtown Juneau
Walk off and you are there. Berths vary, though: from the far end it is about a 1.5-mile walk into the centre.
Bus / taxi / shuttle
Mendenhall Glacier and Nugget Falls
Capital Transit states plainly that its buses do NOT reach the Visitor Center: the nearest stop is Dredge Lake Road, about 1.5 miles short of it, and the operator puts the one-way trip from downtown at up to 1.5 hours including roughly 30 minutes of walking. Nugget Falls is a further walk beyond the Visitor Center. Allow substantial extra time, or take a taxi, shuttle or tour instead.

Whale watching and farther trips
Auke Bay and the wider Inside Passage trips leave from outside town and run to their own timetable. These are the excursions where the operator carries the return risk instead of you.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
2-3 hrs at Mendenhall Glacier itself; the tramway is a shorter add-on right at the dock
Accessibility
The paved path from the Mendenhall visitor center to Nugget Falls is flat and wheelchair-accessible; the public-bus route to get there involves more walking than the private shuttle option.
Crowds
Private glacier shuttles can sell out in peak summer season — worth booking ahead even though the port doesn't require an organized excursion at all.
