St John's Co-Cathedral
1 hr 45 min
About 25 min from the port
Closed Sundays and public holidays — the single most important fact here, because a Sunday call cannot see inside at all. Commissioned in 1572 as the conventual church of the Knights of St John, with much of the interior by Mattia Preti and two Caravaggios in the Oratory. The cathedral recommends about an hour and three-quarters. Dress modestly, bring a shawl, and note that stiletto heels are barred to protect the inlaid marble floor; photography is allowed but flash and video are not.

The Upper Barrakka Lift and Gardens
1 hr
A short walk from the terminal, and the quickest route into the city centre
The lift answers Valletta's defining problem: the city sits on a headland above the wharf where the ship berths, and the alternative is a climb. It rises 58 m in about 23 seconds in two 21-passenger cabins, delivering you straight to the gardens above the Grand Harbour. The Saluting Battery, built in 1566 as part of the city, overlooks the same harbour.
Ancient History & Ruins
The Grand Master's Palace
1-2 hrs
About 30 min from the port
Built under Grand Master Jean de la Cassiere from 1572 and the seat of Malta's parliament from 1921, now showing the restored State Rooms and the Armoury, with Matteo Perez d'Aleccio's cycle on the Great Siege of 1565. Because it remains a working seat of state, rooms can close at short notice while the Armoury stays open, so treat any single room as unguaranteed.
DIY vs. excursion

Getting around
Easy
Excursion
Optional
Ships berth at the Valletta Waterfront on Pinto Wharf, in the Grand Harbour, about 1.5 km from the city. Valletta sits on a ridge above the wharf, and the answer to the climb is the Barrakka Lift: 58 metres in about 23 seconds, one euro return, from Lascaris Wharf up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens in the centre of the city.
Return risk
Low
Main risk
Lift queues at peak, and route 130's hourly service
Getting back is easy — the lift runs late and taxis are seven minutes away. The two things to watch are lift capacity, two cabins of 21 against several thousand returning passengers, and bus route 130, which runs only about hourly with a last departure around 20:40. Do not build a return plan on the bus.
Getting from the ship
To St John's Co-Cathedral
Walk about 500 metres along the wharf to the Barrakka Lift, then ride up to the Upper Barrakka Gardens. Bus route 130 runs to the city in 15 minutes but only about hourly. Taxis are booked from an office on the promenade and take about seven minutes. There is no dedicated cruise shuttle.

Exploring Valletta
Simplest approach
Wharf to the Barrakka Lift, up to the gardens, then St John's Co-Cathedral and the city on foot — Valletta is small and level once you are on top of the ridge.
Best DIY choice
Valletta
A 23-second lift from the harbour. One of the easiest independent port calls in the Mediterranean.
Consider a tour
Mdina, the Blue Grotto and Gozo
Route 130 is a waterfront shuttle route only, and island-wide buses mean backtracking to the Valletta terminus first.
Check before you plan
A Sunday call
St John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Sundays and public holidays, which changes an independent Valletta day considerably.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
4-5 hours for Valletta itself
Accessibility
The Barrakka Lift makes the 58 metre climb into Valletta step-free, which is unusually good for a walled hill city. The terminal is modernised with facilities for passengers with different abilities.
Weather
Lift hours are seasonal — 06:30 to 00:30 daily in summer, but weekdays only to 22:00 from November to April. A late winter sailaway can outlast it.
Crowds
The Saluting Battery fires at noon and 4pm and draws large crowds year round, right at the top of the lift and exactly when cruise passengers are ashore. St John's Co-Cathedral closes on Sundays and public holidays.
