Nature & Wildlife

Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego

Half a day

The park gate is 12 km from central Ushuaia; scheduled minibuses leave from Fadul and Maipu

More than 68,000 hectares where the Andes meet the Beagle Channel, and the reason most people come ashore here. Bahia Lapataia is the end of Ruta Nacional 3, 3,063 km from Buenos Aires. An entrance fee applies and is bought separately: it is not included in a train ticket, and access is sold online.

Tren del Fin del Mundo

Half a day with travel

The main station is on Ruta Nacional 3 at km 3065, about 8 km from central Ushuaia; getting there is your own arrangement

Retraces the last kilometres of the line the Ushuaia prison ran until it closed in 1947, with an audio guide in ten languages and a roughly 20-minute stop at La Macarena. Two things the ticket does not cover: transport to the station, and the national park entrance, which is obligatory in order to board. No total journey time is published.

A Beagle Channel navigation

3-5 hrs

Departures are from the muelle turistico at Prefectura Naval and Lasserre, not the commercial cruise berth

Itineraries run roughly three to five hours, taking in Isla de los Lobos for sea lions, Isla de los Pajaros for birds and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse, with the longest adding the Isla Martillo penguin colony. Passengers are asked to arrive 30 minutes before departure, and a port tax is paid separately.

DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

Ships berth alongside close to the centre, so San Martin and the waterfront are walkable. Tierra del Fuego National Park and the End of the World train are outside town and need transport.

More details

Ushuaia is a working expedition base as well as a cruise call, which is part of its character — the harbour is full of Antarctic vessels. Staying in town is a complete day; the national park is close enough that an independent taxi trip is realistic here in a way it is not at most stops on this route.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Only the road out to Tierra del Fuego National Park

A central berth and short distances mean the return is straightforward from most plans.
