Ancient History & Ruins

Historic Dockyard Museum

1.5-2 hrs

The strongest choice at a port where the call itself may be cut short: it is in Stanley, walkable from where the tenders land, and the museum states its hours are extended on cruise ship days — including Mondays, when it is otherwise closed. Galleries cover social, maritime and natural history, the 1982 conflict and Antarctic heritage, alongside the Smithy and Gear-shed, the Printing Office and the Wash-house. Standard hours are Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm and weekends 1pm to 4pm.

Ancient History & Ruins

Christ Church Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch

30-45 min

The most southerly Anglican cathedral in the world, consecrated in 1892, with the whalebone arch alongside it. Minutes on foot from the jetty and quick to see, which is exactly why it belongs here: it is the sight that still works if the weather shortens the call.

Nature & Wildlife

Gypsy Cove

2 hrs

The Falkland Islands tourist board calls it 'the most accessible wildlife site from the capital city', 6.5km (4 miles) from Stanley within the Cape Pembroke National Nature Reserve, with a white sand beach. That is past walking range for a port day, so it needs a taxi or a short arranged trip — but it is far nearer than the long overland wildlife excursions, which is what makes it the realistic wildlife choice at an anchorage this weather-dependent.

DIY vs. excursion

Excursion

Helpful

Ships anchor offshore and tender to the town jetty, landing you effectively in the centre of Stanley. The town is small and walkable; the penguin colonies are outside it and need arranged transport.

More details

Treat this call as conditional in a way the others are not. Princess states plainly that Stanley is an anchorage port and that weather may impact arrival — high winds curtail or cancel tendering here more often than at any other stop on this route. Plan a day you would still be content with if the call is shortened, and be cautious about committing to a distant colony visit.

Main risk

Tender operation and Southern Ocean weather

No pier exists; both directions depend on tendering in an exposed Southern Ocean anchorage, and calls are curtailed or cancelled on wind.
