The Erasmus Bridge and the Wilhelminapier

The terminal is on the pier itself
The 802 m bridge, opened in 1996 and nicknamed the Swan for its 139 m asymmetric pylon, connects the city centre to Kop van Zuid. The pier around the terminal holds Hotel New York, the 1917 head office of the Holland America Line, and the De Rotterdam towers next door. This is the sight you are standing in before you decide anything.

The Markthal
1 hr
Blaak metro station is directly outside, on lines A, B and C, with trams 1 and 11
The world's first covered market hall with apartments built over it, opened in 2014, with more than 100 food stalls under an 11,000 m² ceiling artwork. Step-free and, unlike most of Rotterdam's architecture, somewhere you can shelter for an hour.
Beautiful Scenery
The Cube Houses
30-45 min
Piet Blom's 1984 cubes, each rotated 45 degrees and set on a hexagonal pillar, forming what the city calls a forest of tilted yellow houses. They stand beside the Markthal at Blaak, so the two are realistically one stop rather than two.

Getting around

Excursion
Optional
One of the easiest ports in Northern Europe. The berth sits under the De Rotterdam towers on the Wilhelminapier, and the walk into the centre crosses the Erasmus Bridge on a proper pedestrian path — 10 to 20 minutes, and the view is part of the point. Wilhelminaplein metro is about 250 m away with contactless tap-in, two stops to Beurs. The watertaxi from beside Hotel New York is the local alternative. Kinderdijk is the call that actually needs planning.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
A full day. No first-party source publishes a port-day figure; the only sourced components are Kinderdijk at about three hours plus roughly 30 minutes each way, and Euromast at about an hour
Accessibility
Among the better ports in the catalogue for this. RET states every metro station on lines A, B, C, D and E is accessible by lift or ramp, and that all metros board level from the platform. Low-floor trams run on all tram lines, though RET is explicit that only a large part of tram stops — not all — are accessible. All water buses take wheelchairs and mobility scooters. The Markthal describes itself as well accessible. NOT VERIFIED: whether Wilhelminaplein station specifically has a lift; it is covered only by the line-wide statement.
Weather
Not a summer-only port: the terminal's own call calendar shows arrivals spread across much of the year. The Netherlands has a temperate maritime climate with mild winters and cool summers. The one genuinely exposed element of a Rotterdam port day is the crossing itself — an 802 m open span over the Maas — though no official source characterises it as weather-exposed and none is claimed here.
Crowds
No official source addresses crowding in the city centre. The one sourced crowd fact is Kinderdijk's own warning that the last boat back to Rotterdam becomes very busy on peak days, with advice to take an earlier departure — which is the one place on this page where a crowd could cost you the ship.
