Paseo de los Turistas

2 hrs

The seafront boulevard the pier walks straight into, developed through the 1960s and 70s and, in the tourism board's account, what made the port the country's most popular spot for domestic holidaymakers. Cathedral, market and the Marino del Pacifico aquarium park all sit on the near side. This is the whole no-transport option, and it is a real one.

Nature & Wildlife

Carara National Park

Half a day including travel

The realistic nature trip from this port, and the one most itineraries never mention. A transitional forest where dry-forest and rainforest species converge, world-renowned for the endangered scarlet macaw, with easy access from Route 34. It was Costa Rica's first national park with a universal access path, which is the detail that decides it for anyone with limited mobility.

The far parks — Manuel Antonio and Arenal

Named here because the decision is whether to attempt them at all. It is about 2.5 hours each way to Manuel Antonio and about 3 to Arenal, from a port with high return risk. That is a ship's excursion or nothing — not a taxi arrangement made on the pier.

DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion

Recommended

The cruise pier runs about 550 metres out from the Paseo de los Turistas, so you walk off the ship straight into town. Costa Rica's headline national parks are a different proposition: Manuel Antonio is about 2.5 hours away by road and Arenal about 3.

Return risk

High

Main risk

Long inland road transfers

An independent run to Manuel Antonio or Arenal is five to six hours of driving on a port day, and there is no sourced scheduled service to fall back on if something goes wrong.

Getting from the ship

To Paseo de los Turistas seafront

Walk the pier into town — the Paseo de los Turistas, the market and the cathedral are all on the near side. Metered red taxis wait at the pier; insist on the meter. Intercity buses also run from the port area.

Exploring Puntarenas

Simplest approach

Walk the Paseo de los Turistas and the downtown loop past the Municipal Palace, cathedral and Local Market, which is open daily from 6am to 4pm.

Best DIY choice

Puntarenas town

Reached on foot at the end of the pier. Promenade, black sand beach, market, cathedral and the aquarium park.

The realistic nature option

Carara National Park

Much closer than the famous parks, and Costa Rica's first national park with a universal access path.

Consider a tour

Manuel Antonio and Arenal

2.5 and 3 hours each way. A self-organised trip spends most of the port day in a vehicle.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

2-3 hours for the town; a full day for any inland park

Accessibility

Note the pier walk itself is around 550 metres before you reach the promenade. Inland, Carara National Park has a universal access path — the first in Costa Rica — making it the standout choice if mobility matters.

Weather

The cruise season runs roughly October to May. Carara opens at 7am in the dry season (December to April) and 8am in the rainy season (May to November), which matters if your ship docks early.

Crowds

The Paseo fills when a ship is in and empties again; the distance filter does the rest — the far parks are never crowded by cruise passengers because most never get there.
