Top sights
Great Food & Dining
Fremantle's West End and the Cappuccino Strip
2-3 hrs
The City of Fremantle's visitor service puts the Passenger Terminal on Victoria Quay at 15 minutes' walk from the town centre.
The reason this port does not need Perth. Tourism WA describes an exceptionally well-preserved nineteenth-century port-city townscape, with the Round House of 1831 — Western Australia's oldest building — at one end and the cafe strip on South Terrace between Bannister and Parry streets at the other.
Great Food & Dining
Fremantle Markets
1-2 hrs
Open Friday to Sunday and public holiday Mondays only — a midweek call misses them entirely, which makes this the first thing to check against your itinerary. Trading since 1897 in a heritage-listed hall on South Terrace, and the single most-recommended stop in town when it is open.
Ancient History & Ruins
Fremantle Prison
1 hr 15 min per tour
Western Australia's only World Heritage listed building, and a convict site rather than a museum about one. The Convict Prison and Behind Bars tours each run an hour and a quarter; the Tunnels Tour runs two and a half hours and carries real restrictions — minimum age 12, weight limits, an unaided vertical ladder climb and crouched walking, and it is not recommended with vertigo, claustrophobia or severe asthma.
DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion
Optional
The berth is at Fremantle, not Perth. That is good news: the Fremantle Passenger Terminal on Victoria Quay is about 800 metres from Fremantle's town centre, a 15 to 20 minute walk, and Fremantle is a destination in its own right. Perth city is a separate trip, about 25 minutes by train.
Return risk
Moderate
Main risk
Neither free shuttle is guaranteed, and the station one stops about 4pm
The turnaround shuttle between the terminal and Fremantle station runs only until about 4pm, and Fremantle Ports states the pedestrian bridge from the station to the terminal is NO LONGER ACCESSIBLE — not a temporary closure, and no reopening is published. The walking route therefore runs along Peter Hughes Drive and crosses at the pedestrian crossing by the station, which the port puts at about 20 minutes with luggage. Later returners need a taxi.
Getting from the ship
To Fremantle Prison
Walking
About 800 m, 15-20 minutes, to Fremantle's town centre.
Fremantle Ports turnaround shuttle
Terminal to Fremantle station, roughly every 20 minutes, from an hour after berthing until about 4pm. Fremantle Ports states it is for turnaround cruises, not transit calls.
City of Fremantle cruise shuttle
A separate complimentary service from the terminal into the city centre for transit ships. Conditional — the City says it operates based on passenger numbers and arrangements made individually with each cruise line, so confirm with your ship.
Transperth Fremantle line
Fremantle station to Perth in about 25 minutes.
Free CAT bus
A loop around Fremantle every 20 minutes.
Public transport: Good
Walkable from ship: Yes
Tender port: No
Exploring Fremantle
Simplest approach
Walk into Fremantle for the prison, the markets and the harbour, then use the free CAT bus loop around town. Take the Transperth Fremantle line only if you specifically want Perth city.
Best DIY choice
Fremantle
The prison, the markets, the harbour and the cafe strip are all on foot from the berth.
Easy by train
Perth city and Kings Park
About 25 minutes on the Fremantle line, then you are in a different city for the day.
Book ahead
Rottnest Island
Ferries leave from Victoria Quay itself, about 25-30 minutes each way, plus an island admission fee. The B Shed ferry terminal is a construction site until 2028 and boarding has moved to O'Connor Landing.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
3-4 hours for Fremantle; a full day if you add Perth or Rottnest
Accessibility
The terminal has lifts and escalators between levels. Fremantle Prison's accessibility varies sharply by tour — the Behind Bars tour is around 90 per cent wheelchair accessible while the Convict Prison and Tunnels tours are not accessible at all.
