Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

Statue City Cruises is the only ferry authorised by the National Park Service, departing from The Battery in Lower Manhattan or Liberty State Park in New Jersey. The NPS warns that other vendors sell boats that do not land on the islands. Crown access requires a minimum height of 42 inches.

Excursion

Optional

From Manhattan the subway is a few blocks away and the city is yours. From Red Hook every subway route the terminal itself lists requires a bus transfer first — that is the port operator's own information, not a rumour.

More details

Manhattan Cruise Terminal is at 711 12th Avenue with five berths across Piers 88 and 90, and its own directions page names the A, C, B, D and 1 trains at Columbus Circle plus the M57 and M31 buses. Brooklyn Cruise Terminal is in Red Hook, and every subway option it publishes needs a connecting bus: the F to Smith/9th Street then the B77, or the 2, 3, 4, 5, N or R to Borough Hall then the B61. The NYC Ferry is the only single-seat public link it advertises, on the South Brooklyn route. Cape Liberty is a separate port in Bayonne, New Jersey — Royal Caribbean lists it verbatim as "Cape Liberty (New York), New Jersey" — and none of the above applies there.

Return risk

Moderate

Main risk

The Red Hook bus connection, and Manhattan traffic surcharging

Moderate from Manhattan, where the subway is close but the terminal sits inside the Congestion Relief Zone and road journeys carry both congestion and rush-hour surcharges. Higher from Brooklyn: every public route the terminal publishes depends on a connecting bus, with no subway fallback if it is delayed, and the NYC Ferry is the only single-seat alternative. No official source publishes traffic data or a recommended all-aboard buffer.

Getting from the ship

To Manhattan — Hell's Kitchen, Times Square and the West Side

Subway (Manhattan terminal)

The terminal names the A, C, B, D and 1 trains at Columbus Circle. It does not publish a walking distance.

Bus + subway (Brooklyn terminal)

The terminal's own routings are the F to Smith/9th Street then the B77, or the 2/3/4/5/N/R to Borough Hall then the B61. There is no walkable subway entrance.

NYC Ferry

St. George route at the West 39th Street landing for Manhattan; South Brooklyn route at the Red Hook landing for Brooklyn — the only one-seat public link the Brooklyn terminal advertises.

MTA fares

$3.00 a ride on subway and local bus, paid by contactless card or phone through OMNY, with unlimited transfers for two hours and a $35 weekly cap after which rides are free.

Taxi

The terminals publish airport estimates: Brooklyn quotes $45-60 from JFK, $28-38 from LaGuardia and $80-100 from Newark. The city's own flat JFK-Manhattan fare is $70 plus surcharges.

Exploring New York, USA

Straightforward

Manhattan Cruise Terminal, West Side

Five berths on Piers 88 and 90 at 711 12th Avenue, with subway and bus routes published by the terminal. Note it sits inside the Congestion Relief Zone below 60th Street, so taxis and rideshares carry additional surcharges.

Plan the transfer

Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Red Hook

A single 880 ft berth with shore power. The terminal itself confirms there is no direct subway — plan on the B61 or B77 bus, the NYC Ferry, or a taxi, and remember the return needs the same connection in reverse.

A different port

Cape Liberty, Bayonne

Marketed by Royal Caribbean as "Cape Liberty (New York)" but physically in New Jersey, across the Hudson. None of New York City's terminal, transit or taxi information applies. Galythia holds it as a separate port record.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A full day from Manhattan; from Red Hook, subtract the bus-and-train connection at both ends before planning anything

Accessibility

Both terminals process insulin, oxygen equipment, wheelchairs and medications through security, and offer accessible parking at standard rates. Note the MTA states it is still working to make more of its 472 subway stations accessible — most are not — so check the specific stations on your route against the MTA's accessible-station list rather than assuming.

Crowds

The terminals advise not arriving before 11am, with boarding typically from 11:30 to 12:30 and baggage processing starting no earlier than 09:30. Neither terminal offers luggage storage.
