Pompeii

Transit across the city to Napoli Centrale, then the Circumvesuviana towards Sorrento

The route is two legs in each direction: across the city from the port to Napoli Centrale / Piazza Garibaldi, then the Circumvesuviana line towards Sorrento. Build the return into the plan rather than the outward journey alone.

1-2 hrs

Walkable from the dock; most of Naples' own sights are within walking distance or a short bus ride.

Excursion

Helpful

Naples itself is an easy walk from the dock, but Pompeii — the main reason most cruisers stop here — requires a separate multi-leg train trip. Adding the Amalfi Coast on top of that is hard to fit comfortably, and on a shorter call it is not realistic.

More details

Naples' cruise terminal (Molo Beverello/Stazione Marittima) puts you directly in the city center, within walking distance of most of central Naples. To reach Pompeii, you first need to get across the city to the Circumvesuviana, then ride it toward Sorrento to Pompei Scavi ( trains run every 20-30 minutes). The train itself is inexpensive and genuinely manageable for confident travelers, but it can get very crowded, especially in summer.

Crowded commuter train + multi-leg transfer

Allow buffer for the return trip — the Circumvesuviana runs every 20-30 minutes, but crowding can mean missing one.

Getting from the ship

To Pompeii

Metro Line 1

Reaches the port by underpass at Municipio. Twenty stations, running 06:00-23:00 on weekdays, every ten minutes until 20:00 and every fourteen after. Every station is wheelchair accessible.

Circumvesuviana (EAV)

The line for Pompeii and Herculaneum. Two different lines serve two different Pompeii stations: Napoli-Sorrento stops at Pompei Villa dei Misteri for the Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra entrances, while Napoli-Poggiomarino stops at Pompei Santuario for Piazza Anfiteatro.

Trenitalia

A separate Pompei station on the Napoli-Salerno line, connected to the archaeological park by the Pompei Link train-and-bus service in about fifteen minutes.

Exploring Naples, Italy

Walk once there

Central Naples

The terminal at Molo Beverello/Stazione Marittima puts you in the city centre; most of it is within walking distance.

Book transport

Pompeii

The main reason most cruisers stop here, and it needs a separate multi-leg train trip via Napoli Centrale rather than a walk.

Not in one day

Pompeii plus the Amalfi Coast

Adding the Amalfi Coast to Pompeii is hard to fit comfortably on the same call, and on a shorter one it is not realistic at all — check your own all-aboard against both legs before committing.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

2-3 hrs at Pompeii itself; with the transfers at both ends, the full round trip takes most of a typical call — work back from your own all-aboard rather than assuming it fits

Accessibility

Central Naples is the most accessible option from the ship by a clear margin: ANM states every Metro Line 1 station is wheelchair accessible, and the line reaches the port by underpass. Pompeii's own accessible route runs over 3.5 km from the Piazza Anfiteatro entrance, but the park itself documents ramp gradients that may exceed 8%, stretches of uneven ancient paving and passages admitting only one wheelchair at a time. Note that this route starts at the entrance served by the OTHER Circumvesuviana line, not the one most cruise passengers are directed to. Circumvesuviana station accessibility is not published.

Weather

Pompeii has very little shade; summer afternoons get hot, similar to other open-air ancient sites.

Crowds

The Circumvesuviana has a reputation for pickpockets — keep valuables secure. Pompeii itself gets busy by midday.
