Why this port matters
Ships dock right in central Naples — an easy walk into the city — but the main reason most cruisers stop here, Pompeii, is a separate multi-leg trip inland.

Naples itself is an easy walk from the dock, but Pompeii — the main reason most cruisers stop here — requires a separate multi-leg train trip. Given a typical 6-8 hour port day, adding the Amalfi Coast on the same day generally isn't realistic.
More details
Naples' cruise terminal (Molo Beverello/Stazione Marittima) puts you directly in the city center — a 10-minute walk covers most of central Naples. To reach Pompeii, you first need to get to Napoli Centrale/Piazza Garibaldi station (about 10 minutes by local tram or bus, or a 30-40 minute walk), then ride the Circumvesuviana toward Sorrento to Pompei Scavi (roughly 35-40 minutes; trains run every 20-30 minutes). The train itself is inexpensive and genuinely manageable for confident travelers, but it can get very crowded, especially in summer.

Crowded commuter train + multi-leg transfer
Allow buffer for the return trip — the Circumvesuviana runs every 20-30 minutes, but crowding can mean missing one.

Best Small Group
Pompeii and Herculaneum Small Group Excursion from Naples
Covers both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one well-organized day with a genuinely small group (max 19) and an archaeologist guide — reviews are consistently strong, unlike the larger 30-person Pompeii-only alternative.
8 hrs · Small group (max 19)
Worth knowing
Meeting point is at Naples Central Station, not directly at the cruise pier — factor in a short walk or local transit. No return-protection language is stated on the provider's own page.

Best if: I want Pompeii handled for me, in a smaller group than the standard 30-40 person bus tours, with more depth than a Pompeii-only itinerary.

Recommended visit duration
2-3 hrs at Pompeii itself; the full round trip with transfers realistically takes most of a 6-8 hour port day
Weather
Pompeii has very little shade; summer afternoons get hot, similar to other open-air ancient sites.
Crowds
The Circumvesuviana has a reputation for pickpockets — keep valuables secure. Pompeii itself gets busy by midday.
