DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Conditional

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

The terminals sit on an island, so leaving always means a vehicle or the port trolley. Once across, the city is straightforward on your own.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Causeway and downtown traffic

Distances are short, but the causeway is the only route back to the terminals and traffic is what stretches an otherwise brief return.

Getting from the ship

Taxi / rideshare

The simplest option. Taxis wait at the cruise terminals on cruise days, and PortMiami has designated rideshare pick-up and drop-off areas.

Free public transit

The City of Miami Coral Way Trolley serves PortMiami and connects toward Downtown. From there Metromover is fare-free and covers Downtown and Brickell.

Walking

Part of the PortMiami Bridge can be walked, but it is scenic rather than a practical way to start a sightseeing day.

Public transport: Limited

Walkable from ship: No

Tender port: No

Exploring Miami

Best DIY choice

Downtown & Brickell

Easiest option, and straightforward once you're off Dodge Island. Fare-free Metromover loops both areas, so the only arranged leg is getting across and back.

More planning needed

Miami Beach

Doable independently, but a bigger commitment: it's across Biscayne Bay, so you're relying on a road crossing each way. Combining it with Downtown in a short port day needs time management.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Half a day for one neighbourhood; a full day to combine two

Accessibility

The main neighbourhoods are flat; beach access varies by entrance point.

Weather

Hot and humid much of the year, with frequent afternoon storms in the wet season.

Crowds

One of the world's busiest turnaround ports — road congestion around the port peaks on embarkation mornings.

Worth booking ahead?
