KATAKOLON IS NOT OLYMPIA. The port is a small harbour on the west coast of the Peloponnese; Ancient Olympia is inland, and reaching it is the whole decision on this call. The unusual thing about Katakolon is that the independent option is genuinely good: Hellenic Train, the national operator, runs a tourist service it describes as a short 45-minute rail route from the port, at 10 euro for the round trip. The catch is that it runs Monday to Saturday, so a Sunday call is a different day entirely.
More details
Budget the site as well as the journey. The Greek Ministry of Culture publishes a combined ticket at 20 euro that covers the archaeological site and the museums of Ancient Olympia, with summer hours of 08:00 to 20:00 from 1 April to 31 October and winter hours of 08:30 to 15:30 from 1 November to 31 March — so a late-season call runs into a 15:30 close, not an evening one. A municipal page still showing a 12 euro ticket is out of date and should not be used. KTEL Ilias also publishes a Pyrgos to Olympia bus timetable, but its fare cells are empty, so no bus fare is stated here. Katakolo village itself is a walk from the quay and holds the waterfront tavernas, which is what makes staying put a real option rather than a consolation.

Main risk
The tourist train's limited running days
Olympia is a round trip inland on a service that does not run every day of the week, and the site's winter close at 15:30 can squeeze the afternoon from the other end. Neither is a queue problem — it is a timetable problem, and the way to manage it is to check the day's train before committing rather than to leave extra time at the pier.
Getting from the ship
To Ancient Olympia
Tourist train
Hellenic Train's Katakolo-Olympia service, which the operator describes as a short 45-minute rail route, at 10 euro for the round trip, Monday to Saturday. Per-train departure times could not be read reliably from the operator's timetable PDF.
Walking
Katakolo village and its waterfront are a walk from the quay — the reason a short call here needs no transport at all.
Bus
KTEL Ilias publishes a Pyrgos-Olympia timetable, but its fare column is empty and the Katakolo connection appears on limited days, so no fare or frequency is stated here.

Exploring Katakolon
Simplest approach
The Hellenic Train tourist service to Olympia and back, with the Ministry of Culture's 20 euro combined ticket bought at the site, and the village and its tavernas on the return — provided the call is not on a Sunday.
Train, Monday to Saturday
Ancient Olympia
Hellenic Train's own description is a short 45-minute rail route at 10 euro return from the port. Add the Ministry of Culture's 20 euro combined site-and-museums ticket, and check the day of the week first.
No transport needed
Katakolo village
The harbour village is a walk from the quay, with the waterfront tavernas and shops. A genuine choice for a short call, not a fallback.
Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Olympia needs most of a call once 45 minutes each way and three hours on site are counted. The village alone needs two.
Weather
Peloponnesian summers are hot and the site at Olympia is largely unshaded; the winter closing time of 15:30 matters more than the weather on a late-season call.
Crowds
A small harbour serving a single famous inland site, so the train and the site both concentrate the day's passengers into the same few hours.
