Ancient History & Ruins

The old town and the Westfjords Heritage Museum

1-2 hrs

Very close to the harbour where cruise passengers disembark

Neðstikaupstaður is the oldest cluster of buildings in Iceland, from the later 18th century, and now holds the Heritage Museum's fisheries and boat collections. The houses around it are private homes despite looking like exhibits, and the municipality asks visitors not to enter them.

Beautiful Scenery

Ísafjörður on foot

2 hrs

A town of under 3,000 people under steep mountains, and the cultural hub of the Westfjords, with a marked old-town walking route of about 1.8 km. Worth reading the municipality's own caution first: not all streets near the harbour have pavements, and the old town's lanes are narrow and one-way.

Nature & Wildlife

Vigur island

Half a day

By boat; a day tour runs from Ísafjörður

A small island in Ísafjarðardjúp with puffins nesting in burrows across much of it, eider colonies and aggressively territorial arctic terns. It also holds Iceland's smallest post office and its only windmill. The nature option that does not involve a mountain road.

Helpful

The berth is in the town itself and Isafjordur is small enough to cover on foot — the tourist info hut sits at the harbour when ships are in. BERTH OR ANCHOR IS ASSIGNED PER CALL, not by ship size: the municipality's own schedule shows a 3,502-passenger ship at Sundabakki on a day when smaller ships lay at anchor, so check your own ship's arrangements rather than assuming. The Westfjords sights are the trade-off: Dynjandi waterfall is a 45-50 minute drive and Vigur island needs a boat, so anything beyond the town means a tour.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A full day if you leave town for Dynjandi or Vigur; half a day covers the old town and museum comfortably. No first-party source publishes a suggested time ashore

Accessibility

The municipality's own guidance is unusually direct: not all streets in the harbour area have pavements, so visitors are asked to keep to the side of the road, and the old town's streets are narrow and one-way. The town sits under steep mountains with trails laid out around it. At Dynjandi the Environment Agency describes the lower path as paved and accessible to wheelchairs as far as Hrísvaðsfoss, becoming rocky and uneven beyond, with designated accessible parking and year-round toilets. NOT PUBLISHED: any step-free information for the quays or the tender pontoon.

Weather

The port expects calls from roughly May to October, though shoulder dates move year to year. Visit Westfjords warns that weather here changes quickly, that conditions differ between fjords, coastal areas and mountain passes, and that wind, rain, fog or snow can affect travel even when it looks calm nearby — which matters most for the inland drive to Dynjandi. Summer averages run around 9-10°C.

Crowds

The scale mismatch is the point: a town of under 3,000 people against a season of roughly 176 calls, with several ships routinely sharing a day. The municipality's own schedule highlights days exceeding 5,000 combined passengers, and it has adopted a policy setting a two-tier daily passenger cap — the specific numbers are not published in a form that could be verified here.
