Nature & Wildlife

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Most of a port day

45 min drive from Hilo

The reason most ships call here, and it needs most of a port day. The park is open around the clock and caldera-rim viewpoints stay open even when the eruption area is closed. Entry is $30 per vehicle or $15 on foot, card only — no cash — parking can fill by 10am, and volcanic gases can affect sensitive visitors.

Beautiful Scenery

Wailuku River State Park — Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots

45 min-1 hr

The closest real sight to town and free to visit: the 80-foot Waianuenue (Rainbow Falls) and the terraced Boiling Pots. Rainbow Falls is open during daylight hours, Boiling Pots 7am to 5.30pm with gates locked at 6pm. There are no lifeguards, neither area is safe for swimming, and the river floods fast after rain.

Beautiful Scenery

Akaka Falls State Park

1 hr

A short, high-return stop on the Hamakua Coast: an easy 0.4-mile loop through rainforest to the 442-foot 'Akaka Falls. Open daily 8.30am to 5pm. Non-residents pay $5 each plus $10 per vehicle, and the water supply has been shut off, so do not count on restrooms.

Getting around

Excursion

Helpful

Downtown Hilo is a short taxi ride rather than a walk. The national park is a substantial drive inland, so the day turns on whether you have arranged transport.

More details

Hilo is the wettest city in the United States and rain here is normal rather than exceptional — pack for it even if the previous port was dry. Volcanoes National Park conditions vary with volcanic activity, so check the park's own status before committing to a self-drive plan.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the case for booking: it is 45 minutes inland, the county's own bus service to it is described as very limited, and the park's parking lots can be full by 10am.

Main risk

Distance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

The national park is far enough inland that a self-drive day depends on traffic and weather holding.

Getting from the ship

To Hilo's waterfalls, gardens and town, with Hawaii Volcanoes National Park as the major farther excursion

Hele-On bus

Hawaii County's transit system. Route 101: Keaukaha runs seven days a week between the Mooheau Bus Terminal, Keaukaha and Hilo International Airport, with Hilo Harbor among its stops — but the county's own instruction is to walk from the harbour along Kuhio Street to the Kalanianaole Street intersection to reach the stop.

Taxi or rental car

The practical choice for the waterfalls, the gardens and anything on the Hamakua Coast, all of which sit apart from each other.

Organised tour

How most passengers reach Hawaii Volcanoes National Park inside a port day. Hele-On's own page states that service between Hilo and the park is very limited.

Exploring Hilo

Simplest approach

For Hilo town, Hele-On's Route 101: Keaukaha runs seven days a week between the Mooheau Bus Terminal, Keaukaha and Hilo International Airport with Hilo Harbor among its stops — but the county's own instruction is to walk from the harbour along Kuhio Street to the Kalanianaole Street intersection to reach the stop, so check the day's timetable and that walk before relying on it. For Volcanoes National Park, arrange a car or tour: Hele-On states that service between Hilo and the park is very limited, and it is a substantial inland drive rather than a normal transit trip.

Transit possible

Hilo town

Hele-On connects the harbour with the Mooheau terminal in town. Service is limited rather than frequent, so confirm return times before setting out.

Car or tour

Volcanoes National Park

Far enough inland that public transit is not a realistic way to do it inside a port call. This is the trip worth booking.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Three to four hours covers a falls-and-gardens loop around Hilo once transport is arranged; Hawaii Volcanoes National Park takes most of a port day and is a different plan rather than an addition.

Accessibility

Two different problems, and they should not be conflated. Reaching anything at all requires a vehicle or the Hele-On route above, which itself involves a walk along Kuhio Street to the stop. At the sights, the natural areas are the harder half — waterfall viewpoints and state-park paths can be uneven and, in this part of the island, wet. Liliuokalani Gardens is the most level option near town, and the county records it as ADA accessible with restrooms and a walking path.

Weather

Hilo sits on the wet, windward side of the island and rain here is routine rather than exceptional, so pack for it even if the previous port was dry — and note that wet stone and boardwalk are a slip risk at the falls and gardens. Volcanic gas at the national park is a separate published hazard for sensitive groups, and park conditions vary with volcanic activity.

Crowds

The town absorbs visitors easily. The pressure point is the national park, whose parking lots the NPS says can be full by 10am — which is exactly when a ship's passengers arrive — with a summit construction project running into late 2026.
