2-3 hrs

45 min on foot, or a short taxi

Iceland's most photographed mountain and the waterfalls below it, visible from the harbour and the reason most ships call here. About 4 km west of town — walkable in good weather, otherwise worth arranging a taxi.

Snæfellsjökull National Park

Half day

The wild far end of the peninsula — black pebble beaches, a climbable crater and a protected coast path. Far too distant to reach on foot, so this is what the ship's tours are for.

Helpful

A fishing town of about 900 people, and Kirkjufell is visible from the port — the reason most ships call. The town centre is a 10-15 minute walk from the pier and compact once there. Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss are about 4 km west: a 45-minute walk along the shoreline, or a short taxi. Taxis are very limited and there is no public bus, so a DIY day here means walking or pre-arranging transport. Smaller ships dock; larger ones anchor and tender a short distance to the same harbour. The wider Snaefellsnes Peninsula needs a tour.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Three to four hours for the walk out to Kirkjufell and back; the town itself needs under an hour.

Accessibility

The pier into town is easy. Kirkjufell is an 8 km round trip on exposed road with uneven paths at the falls — arrange transport if that is too far, as there is no reliable bus.

Weather

An exposed coastal walk with nothing to shelter behind, and short daylight late in the season.

Crowds

A town of about 900 people taking full-size ships, so the road out to Kirkjufell gets busy when one is alongside.
