Family Fun

Acquario di Genova

At Porto Antico, open 09:00-20:00 every day of the year with last admission at 18:00. The cheapest tickets are "Fixed Date", which require booking a specific date and time slot in advance.

Ancient History & Ruins

Via Garibaldi and the Palazzi dei Rolli

UNESCO-listed since 2006 — 42 noble palaces once used by rotation to lodge visiting dignitaries. Palazzo Rosso, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Doria Tursi are open as the Musei di Strada Nuova.

Beautiful Scenery

The caruggi and Spianata Castelletto

The medieval lanes, then the Art Nouveau Castelletto lift from Piazza Portello up to a terrace over the roofs and the harbour — the lift runs 06:40 to midnight on an ordinary AMT ticket.

DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion

Optional

Ponte dei Mille and Ponte Andrea Doria both sit close to the historic centre, and Genoa's own vertical transport — public lifts and funiculars, all on the ordinary bus ticket — is what makes a steep city walkable.

More details

The port authority gives both terminals as about 1 km from the city centre and 400 m from the railway station; MSC, berthing here, describes the terminal as under two kilometres west of the centre and Genova Piazza Principe as about 500 m away. Genoa's historic centre is one of the largest medieval quarters in Europe at 113 hectares, and the official tourism board's guidance is simply that it is explored on foot. Where the hills defeat that, AMT's network of public lifts and two funiculars is covered by the same ticket as the bus and metro — the Ascensore Castelletto, an Art Nouveau lift from Piazza Portello to a panoramic terrace, runs 06:40 to midnight.

Return risk

Low

Main risk

Day trips out of the city, not the walk back

Low for a city day — the terminals are about a kilometre from the centre and 400 metres from the station. The risk sits in the excursions: Portofino's boat does not leave for the return until 16:50, and Cinque Terre requires two separate ticketing systems with no verifiable journey time from Genoa.

Getting from the ship

To Porto Antico, the Aquarium and the old town caruggi

On foot

The port authority puts both terminals about 1 km from the centre; the official tourism board's advice for the old town is to walk it.

AMT bus, metro, lifts and funiculars

One integrated ticket, €2 valid 110 minutes across buses, the metro, the two funiculars and the public lifts. A MetDaily 24-hour ticket is €10 and also covers the Volabus airport coach.

Rail

Genova Piazza Principe, roughly 400-500 m from the terminals, is the strongest asset for a turnaround day.

Boat

Golfo Paradiso sails to Portofino, San Fruttuoso and Camogli from Porto Antico in the city, not from the cruise terminal.

Exploring Genoa, Italy

Best DIY choice

The old town and Porto Antico

The 113-hectare medieval core, the UNESCO-listed Palazzi dei Rolli on Via Garibaldi and Renzo Piano's regenerated waterfront are all in the same walkable area as the terminals.

Watch the return time

Portofino by boat

Golfo Paradiso's full-day tour leaves Porto Antico at 10:00 and does not depart Portofino for the return until 16:50 — a genuinely late finish with no easy backup if you miss the boat.

Harder than it looks

Cinque Terre

The Cinque Terre card covers only Levanto to La Spezia and explicitly does not extend to Genoa, so you are stitching two ticketing systems together. No first-party source publishes a Genoa journey time, and card sales are suspended under orange or red weather warnings. Better as an excursion or an overnight than an independent port day.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

A full port day suits the old town, Via Garibaldi and the Aquarium; the Aquarium alone will take a substantial part of a morning

Accessibility

Genoa is steep and the old town is narrow and stepped, which is precisely why AMT's ten-plus public lifts and two funiculars carry ordinary bus tickets — they are the practical accessible route uphill. The city publishes an accessible-venues directory, though without per-venue barrier detail. The Aquarium offers a discounted rate for disabled visitors and free entry for companions of visitors with 100% disability.

Crowds

Genoa and Savona together handle over 2.5 million cruise passengers a year and Genoa is a homeport, so turnaround mornings are busy.

Worth booking ahead?
