The Forth Bridge

At the tender landing
The 2.5 km cantilever rail bridge of 1890, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still carrying trains. There is no public access onto it, but the view from the waterfront is the point — and the tender lands right there.

South Queensferry High Street and waterfront
1-2 hrs
10 min on foot
A narrow cobbled high street and harbour front under the bridges, with pubs and small museums. Flat, compact and the whole reason staying local here is a real choice rather than a consolation.
Ancient History & Ruins
Hopetoun House
2-3 hrs
A grand Adam country house and estate just west of the village. Its 2026 season runs to 27 September, Thursday to Monday 11:00-17:00 — closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so check the day before counting on it.

Recommended
A tender call 10 miles from Edinburgh, and emphatically not walkable to the city. Tenders land at Hawes Pier and the village itself is the easy part — High Street, the waterfront and the Forth Bridges are all flat and within ten minutes. Reaching Edinburgh needs arranged transport; the walk up to Dalmeny Station is steep, involves staircases and is not step-free. Staying local is a legitimate choice here rather than a consolation.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Two to three hours does the village and the bridges. Edinburgh is a separate decision and takes most of the day once the tender is counted.
Accessibility
The village is flat and easy. The climb to Dalmeny Station is steep with staircases and not step-free, so the bus is the accessible way out.
Weather
A tender call on an open firth — wind can delay or cancel the boats, and nothing about the village walk is sheltered.
Crowds
Lothian's X99 Cruiselink runs from Hawes Pier into central Edinburgh in about 30 minutes with no booking needed, which absorbs most of the ship on an Edinburgh day.
