Dubrovnik City Walls

1-2 hrs

Libertas bus from outside the port to Pile gate, 10 to 15 min depending on traffic

The Old Town's main attraction and the reason most passengers are ashore: a 1,940 m circuit taking in sixteen towers and three fortresses. The ticket is valid for one tour and there is no re-entry, so walk it in a single go rather than dipping in and out. Check the forecast and wear proper footwear; there is very little shade. The same ticket also admits you to Fort Lovrijenac.

Ancient History & Ruins

Fort Lovrijenac

Same Libertas bus to Pile, where the port bus terminates

Included with a valid City Walls ticket, which most passengers do not know, and that makes this the cheapest second major sight in the city. The relationship does not run the other way: a Lovrijenac ticket alone does not admit you to the walls. It is reached by steps up a thirty-seven metre rock, and the operator states its heritage sites are difficult to access for people with disabilities.

Beautiful Scenery

Dubrovnik Cable Car (Mount Srd)

The one Dubrovnik plan that can disappear while you are ashore. The operator stops the cable car whenever wind exceeds its safety threshold and whenever lightning is possible, it does not run at all through the winter months, and its hours change substantially from month to month. Check the operator's own calendar for your call date before building a port day around it, and keep a plan that works without it.

DIY vs. excursion

Can I DIY this?

Yes

Getting around

Easy

Excursion

Optional

Ships use Gruz, not the Old Town. The port authority's own figure for walking it is 30 to 40 minutes, so most people take the Libertas bus — 10 to 15 minutes to Pile gate, every 10 to 20 minutes, with the stop right outside the port. Taxis wait outside the terminal and take 7 to 10 minutes.

Return risk

Moderate

Main risk

Gruz-Pile road traffic, or tender queues if anchored

The port's own bus estimate is explicitly 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic, on a road shared with every other ship's passengers. Dubrovnik also berths two ships at Gruz and anchors a third off the Old City, so which of those you are on decides whether you have a tender queue to allow for.

Getting from the ship

To The Old Town city walls

Libertas city buses leave from outside the port for Pile gate, at the Old Town's western entrance. Taxi ranks sit directly outside the terminal, and the terminal itself has ATMs, restaurants and an information office. Carry small change for the bus.

Exploring Dubrovnik

Simplest approach

Libertas bus to Pile, walk the walls first while it is cooler, then the Old Town at your own pace and the bus back from the same stop.

Best DIY choice

Dubrovnik Old Town

Cheap, frequent buses from the port door. A city excursion adds little beyond a guided wall walk.

Watch the weather

Mount Srd by cable car

The cable car runs on demand and stops in high wind or lightning, and it is closed from December to March.

Consider a tour

Kotor, Ston, Cavtat and the Elaphiti Islands

Outside the city bus network, and Montenegro means a border crossing.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

4-5 hours, allowing about an hour for the wall circuit alone

Accessibility

The wall circuit involves steps and uneven surfaces, and its operator advises caution and checking the forecast first. Children under 7 enter free, with discounts for students, veterans and holders of a valid disability card.

Weather

The port authority specifically flags summer heat against the 30 to 40 minute walk into town — take the bus. The Srd cable car is closed January to March and in December, and hours vary widely by month.

Crowds

Dubrovnik actively caps arrivals: measures in most cases limit cruise passengers to 8,000 a day, and of 243 cruise days only 18 exceed that. The authority has refused around forty call requests in a single season.
