Ancient History & Ruins
Chacchoben archaeological zone
3-4 hours including travel
About an hour each way by road
The largest excavated Maya site in southern Quintana Roo and the reason most people leave the coast at all. INAH publishes opening hours of 09:00-15:00 daily with last entry at 14:30 — check your ship's berthing time against that before arranging anything independently. Jungle setting, raised temple groups, and a site rule against bringing food in.
Beaches & Snorkeling
Mahahual beach and malecón
Half a day
Short taxi, paid shuttle, or a 45-minute walk
The village the port is named for, and the default independent day. A single flat seafront strip of beach clubs, restaurants and dive shops. Most clubs trade a lounger and shade for a food-and-drink minimum rather than charging at the gate.
Beaches & Snorkeling
Mesoamerican Reef snorkelling off Mahahual
2-3 hours
The reef runs close inshore here, which is what lets a beach day and a snorkel day be the same trip. Conditions and visibility move with the wind, so this is a call to make on the morning rather than a booking to lock in weeks ahead.

The condition is which of the three Costa Mayas you are going to. The terminal village is a walk-off. Mahahual is a short taxi, a paid shuttle or, per Celebrity's own port page, a 45-minute walk. Chacchoben is an inland round trip against a hard closing time, and it is the one plan here where an organised tour earns its price.
More details
Costa Maya is a purpose-built cruise terminal rather than a town you happen to dock in. Off the gangway you are in a commercial village — Celebrity's port page lists shops, places to eat, ATMs, restrooms, WiFi, a spa and a large pool with a swim-up bar, alongside the Aviarus aviary, the Kakaw cocoa attraction and the La Consentida tequila distillery. Plenty of passengers never leave it, and on a short call that is a defensible choice rather than a wasted one. Mahahual is the actual village, a few kilometres up the coast. Celebrity describes it as "a short cab ride or 45-minute walk from the cruise port" and notes a shuttle bus "for a small fee". The walk is along a road in full sun with little shade, so it reads better early or late than in the middle of the day. Once there it is a single beachfront strip of beach clubs, restaurants and dive shops, with the Mesoamerican Reef close inshore. Chacchoben is the headline archaeological site and the one genuine timing trap. INAH publishes its hours as 09:00–15:00 daily with last entry at 14:30, and Celebrity puts the site about an hour from the port. A ship that berths late, or a self-arranged taxi that sets off after lunch, can arrive to a closed gate.
On the ruins specifically, a ship-sold tour is held for its own passengers and the coach is the operator's problem rather than yours. That is the real argument for booking one here — not the commentary.
Return risk
Moderate
Main risk
Inland road time to the ruins
A Mahahual day carries very little return risk — you are a few kilometres away and taxis run constantly. A Chacchoben day is the opposite: roughly an hour of road each way, no realistic alternative transport if your driver does not come back, and a site that stops admitting visitors at 14:30. Independent travellers doing the ruins are the ones who need to watch the clock.
Getting from the ship
To Chacchoben Maya ruins
Walking
Fine inside the terminal village. Celebrity puts Mahahual at a 45-minute walk — a real option early or late, less so in the middle of a hot day, and there is little shade for most of it.
Shuttle bus
Celebrity's port page notes a shuttle bus to Mahahual "for a small fee". The simplest way into the village without negotiating anything.
Taxi
Taxis work the terminal exit. Agree the fare before you get in — rates here are set by arrangement rather than a meter. No figure is recorded in this guide, because a quoted one would be out of date within a season.
Organised excursion coach
The sensible way to reach Chacchoben and get back, against a site that closes at 15:00, unless you are confident arranging a driver yourself.

Exploring Costa Maya
Simplest approach
Taxi or shuttle to Mahahual, walk the malecón, settle into a beach club for the middle of the day, snorkel off the beach if the water is calm, and taxi back with time in hand. It is the plan that needs the least to go right.
No planning needed
Costa Maya terminal village
Walk-off, card and USD accepted, and enough in it to fill a short call. Not the real Mexico, and not pretending to be.
Best DIY choice
Mahahual
A short taxi, a paid shuttle, or a 45-minute walk per Celebrity's own port page. Flat, small, and easy to get back from. This is where an independent day genuinely works.
More planning needed
Chacchoben and the inland ruins
About an hour each way by road, and INAH closes the site at 15:00 with last entry at 14:30. The one part of this port where the organised option is worth paying for.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Mahahual is comfortable in four to five hours. Chacchoben needs three to four including the drive, which makes it a tight choice on a short call rather than a relaxed one.
Accessibility
The pier and terminal village are flat and purpose-built. Mahahual's malecón is largely flat but the surface is uneven in places and beach access is over sand. Chacchoben is a jungle archaeological site with unpaved paths and uneven ground, and its structures are not step-free.
Weather
Hot and humid year round, with a summer and autumn rainy season overlapping the Atlantic hurricane season — this is an exposed coast and calls here are occasionally dropped or swapped at short notice. Reef snorkelling depends on wind: a breezy morning can flatten visibility for the rest of the day.
Crowds
A multi-ship day changes this port materially. The terminal village absorbs it reasonably well; the taxi rank and Mahahual's short beachfront do not. If two or more ships are alongside, going early is worth more here than at most ports.
