Beautiful Scenery
Castello and the Bastione di Saint Remy
2 hrs
15 min on foot
The walled hilltop quarter and its terrace over the rooftops and the gulf. A free public lift runs up to the Bastione, so the steep lanes are a choice rather than the only way in.
Ancient History & Ruins
Cagliari Cathedral
45 min
The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, at the heart of Castello a few steps from the Bastione. Folds into the same walk rather than needing a trip of its own.
Ancient History & Ruins
Museo Archeologico Nazionale
1.5 hrs
Home to part of the Giants of Mont'e Prama, the Nuragic stone figures found on Sardinia's west coast. Open daily 08:30-19:30, with the ticket office closing at 18:45.
DIY vs. excursion

Getting around

Excursion
Optional
Molo Rinascita puts the ship beside the historic port and the city centre, but there is one step before the walk: passengers are normally required to take a free shuttle from the ship to the port gates, because walking inside the port area is not permitted. Beyond the gates everything is on foot. The old town rises steeply into Castello, and the city solved that with free public lifts — one goes directly up to the Bastione di Saint Remy — so the climb is optional rather than unavoidable. CTM buses reach Poetto beach for a euro or two.

Practical notes
Recommended visit duration
Four to five hours covers Castello, the cathedral and the museum on foot. Poetto beach is the obvious addition on a long call.
Accessibility
A free shuttle is required from the ship to the port gates. After that the centre is flat, and free public lifts handle the climb into Castello.
Weather
Sardinian summers are hot and the Castello terraces have little shade, which is the argument for taking the lift up rather than the lanes.
