Excursion

Optional

Downtown Bridgetown and a couple of good beaches are all within a 20-30 minute walk along the waterfront, with taxis and a shuttle bus also available.

More details

Ships dock at the Deep Water Harbour, about 1 mile west of downtown Bridgetown — a flat, scenic 20-30 minute walk along the boardwalk, a shuttle bus, or a short taxi. Carlisle Bay beach is about 1.5 miles/25-30 minutes on foot, or roughly a 10-minute taxi ride. Brandons Beach is closer, about a 15-20 minute walk. Because Barbados is a small island (about 21 by 14 miles), most attractions are within easy reach of the pier. One noted caveat: taxis are plentiful but can occasionally take up to 30 minutes to secure on busy days — the walk and shuttle bus are reliable backups.

Distances are short and multiple options exist (walk, shuttle, taxi), though taxis have occasionally taken up to 30 minutes to secure when several ships are in port — the walk/shuttle are reliable fallbacks.

Getting from the ship

To Carlisle Bay

Getting ashore here is two stages, not one. Barbados Port Inc runs a complimentary optional shuttle between the ship and the Cruise Terminal, offered according to where your ship is lying at the berth, with wheelchair-accessible units available. The terminal itself holds the Visitor Information Centre, Customs and Immigration, a Tour Departure Area for pre-booked trips, and around 60 shops and bars.

Exploring Bridgetown, Barbados

Simplest approach

Walk out of the main gate. The Port states that the exit leads to Trevors Way, an ocean-side footpath running past the Pelican Craft Centre to the historic Bridgetown shopping centre, and describes the roughly 20-minute walk as safe and pleasurable. If you would rather ride, the Taxi Dispatch Centre sits just outside the terminal with around 255 authorised seaport taxis, identifiable by a coloured Authorized Seaport Taxi sticker on the side panel.

Best DIY choice

Bridgetown

On foot along Trevors Way from the main gate, or by taxi. The Pelican Craft Centre is on the way, so the walk is a destination in itself.

Taxi shuttle

Nearby coast and beaches

Taxis run a shuttle service to Bridgetown and the beach. Agree the price before setting off and confirm whether it is per person or per trip, and in Barbadian or US dollars.

Fix a return time

Farther island touring

For a half- or full-day island tour by taxi, the Port advises fixing a pick-up time in advance. It also warns to allow for heavy traffic around Bridgetown at weekday morning and late-afternoon rush hours.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

6-8 hrs comfortably covers downtown and a beach, with time to spare
