Beautiful Scenery

Manic-2 hydroelectric dam

3 hrs

Hydro-Quebec's nearest generating station, about 22 km north on Route 389, visited on a free two-hour guided tour. Tours run only from mid-June to 31 August and must be reserved ahead.

Nature & Wildlife

Whale watching on the St Lawrence

3 hrs

The estuary here is one of the reliable places to see whales and seals, with operators running from the Manicouagan coast. Weather and season govern whether boats sail at all.

Excursion

Recommended

A small industrial town on the north shore where the ship is the event rather than the other way round. Tourisme Cote-Nord describes the port as having direct access to the town on foot or by bike along a riverside path, so the centre is reachable, but there is not much of a walk-off sightseeing circuit once you are there. The two things worth the day — the Manic hydroelectric dams up Route 389 and whale watching on the estuary — both need transport and both are seasonal, which is why most passengers take a ship excursion here.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

An hour or two does the town. Anything worth travelling for — the dams, the whales — turns it into a half or full day.

Accessibility

The port connects to the town on foot or by bike along a riverside path, but everything beyond the town needs a vehicle.

Weather

A northern estuary call in a short season: cold wind off the water even in summer, and boat trips cancel in weather.
