Ancient History & Ruins

Ambon War Cemetery

1 hr

A Commonwealth war cemetery holding close to two thousand graves, most of them Australian, from the Japanese invasion of the Moluccas and the camps that followed. Permanently open, about 5 km from the city.

Beaches & Snorkeling

Pantai Pintu Kota

2 hrs

A natural rock arch standing off a cliff-backed beach, and the image most associated with Ambon. On the Nusaniwe side of the city, so it is a drive rather than a stroll.

Ancient History & Ruins

Gong Perdamaian Dunia

30 min

The World Peace Gong, raised as a marker of reconciliation after the sectarian conflict of the early 2000s. A short stop rather than a destination, and it explains a lot about the city.

Helpful

The berth is Pelabuhan Nusantara Yos Soedarso in the city itself, so stepping off puts you in Ambon rather than an industrial outskirt. What the city offers is spread out rather than clustered: the war cemetery lies about 5 km north-east on the Galala road, the rock arch at Pintu Kota is on the far side of the peninsula, and the beaches are further again. A taxi or a hired driver is the realistic way to link them, and a guide helps — this is not a port with a walk-off tourist circuit.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Half a day with a driver links the cemetery, the gong and a beach. On foot the city centre alone is an hour or two.

Accessibility

The berth is in the city, but the sights are scattered across the peninsula and none of them connect on foot.

Weather

Hot and humid year round with little seasonal swing. Ambon's wet season is the reverse of most of Indonesia's, peaking around the middle of the year.
