Relaxation & Wellness

The Amber Cove complex

Half day

At the pier

Pools, a waterslide, a zipline, shops and bars built for cruise days. The pool area comes with the call, while the VIP cabanas and the zipline are paid extras.

Beautiful Scenery

Teleférico to Pico Isabel de Torres

2-3 hrs

The cable car up Puerto Plata's mountain, for the panoramic view over city and coast. On the far side of town, so it needs a taxi or a tour rather than a walk.

Ancient History & Ruins

Fortaleza San Felipe

1 hr

A 16th-century Spanish fortress completed in 1577, now a small museum beside La Puntilla park on the Puerto Plata waterfront. Reached by taxi from the pier.

DIY vs. excursion

Excursion

Recommended

A gated Carnival-built resort complex on Maimon Bay rather than a town, and ships dock alongside its private pier so there is no tender. Nothing lies within walking distance outside the gate; the port itself states it is not open to walk-in visitors. There is a taxi rank and a tour pick-up area at the entrance, and Puerto Plata's centre is a 15-20 minute drive, so going independently means arranging a vehicle rather than stepping out into a street.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

The complex will fill a whole call if you let it. Puerto Plata and the cable car need three to four hours once transport is counted.

Accessibility

Ships dock alongside, so boarding is step-off rather than by tender, and the complex itself is level and purpose-built.

Weather

Hot and humid, with September highs around 33C, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November.

Crowds

A two-berth terminal. With two ships alongside the pools, restaurants and loungers are noticeably stretched.
