Ancient History & Ruins

Dunnottar Castle

Helpful

Which harbour you land in decides the day. Port of Aberdeen runs two, and its own cruise-call listings put ships on Balmoral and Castlegate Quays in the South Harbour at Nigg Bay, with Blaikies Quay in the old North Harbour kept for smaller vessels. North Harbour sits in the city and you can walk out of it. South Harbour does not — it is an exposed industrial site outside the centre, and getting into town means a shuttle or a taxi rather than a stroll. Check which berth your ship has before assuming the city is at the gangway. The season runs roughly April to late September.

Practical notes

Recommended visit duration

Four hours covers the city centre museums comfortably. Dunnottar is a half-day once travel each way is counted.

Accessibility

From North Harbour the centre is a short walk. From South Harbour at Nigg Bay it is not walkable at all, so budget for a shuttle or taxi each way.

Weather

North Sea weather is the real variable, and the South Harbour is exposed enough that access has been disrupted by it before.

Worth booking ahead?
