Not every Alaska cruise visits Glacier Bay. Compare five major cruise lines and learn why I recommend including it if glaciers are a priority.

If glaciers are one of your main reasons for visiting Alaska, I would recommend choosing an itinerary that includes Glacier Bay. I visited on a Holland America cruise, and it was a highlight of the trip.

However, not every cruise line can visit the national park. Before comparing ships, food, or cabin prices, check which glacier destinations your sailing actually includes.

Which Cruise Lines Go Where?

Among the five major cruise lines below, Princess, Holland America, and Norwegian are listed as authorized Glacier Bay operators by the National Park Service. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are not on that list, although both offer other glacier-viewing routes.

Why Glacier Bay Is Worth Considering

Glacier Bay is an extended scenic journey through a protected national park. Cruise ships typically spend nine to ten hours in the bay, including a stop at a major tidewater glacier. Park rangers board the ships to explain the landscape and wildlife. Access is limited to no more than two cruise ships per day.

On my Alaska cruise aboard Holland America’s Koningsdam, we were lucky to have clear weather, and the scenery was beautiful.

If glaciers are a main reason for your Alaska trip, I would put Glacier Bay on the shortlist. Clear weather and calving are never guaranteed, but our visit was one of the highlights of the cruise.

To find a suitable sailing, look for “Glacier Bay National Park” in the detailed itinerary. Choosing Princess, Holland America, or Norwegian alone is not enough: those companies also operate routes that visit other glaciers.

Other Glacier Destinations

Hubbard Glacier is a major tidewater-glacier destination, worth considering if you want to see a vast wall of ice. All five companies in the table offer itineraries visiting it. Some cruises also combine Hubbard Glacier with Glacier Bay, giving you two distinct glacier-viewing days.

Endicott Arm & Dawes Glacier offers a scenic fjord journey toward Dawes Glacier. All five companies also offer routes visiting this destination. It is a different location from Tracy Arm and its Sawyer glaciers, so check the exact name on your itinerary.

Can Your Ship Get Close to the Ice?

Permission to enter Glacier Bay and the distance a ship can approach a glacier are separate questions. It is not simply a matter of small ships getting in while large ships stay outside.

The itinerary tells you where your ship plans to go. Weather, safety, and operating conditions can affect the actual route and viewing experience, so a photograph from another sailing is not a promise of the same view on yours.

Some sailings offer separate small-boat glacier excursions. If you are considering one, check the destination, additional cost, and departure arrangements rather than assuming it is included in the cruise fare.

A Note About Tracy Arm

If you are using older reviews to plan, check Tracy Arm information carefully. Major cruise companies avoided it during the 2026 season following an August 2025 landslide and tsunami, with several switching to Endicott Arm. For a future sailing, use the current itinerary and excursion details.

Booking tip: If glaciers are your priority, first shortlist sailings that include Glacier Bay, then compare any additional glacier days and excursions. Once you have the route you want, compare the ships’ food, atmosphere, activities, and cabins.
