Downtown Philipsburg and Great Bay Beach are both a genuine 15-20 minute walk (or a 5-minute water taxi) from the pier — no transport is strictly needed for a beach-and-town day.
More details
Ships dock directly at the AC Wathey Pier in Great Bay. Downtown Philipsburg and Front Street are about a 15-20 minute walk along the harbor, well-marked and lined with shops. A water taxi covers the same distance in about 5 minutes for a small fee. Great Bay Beach sits right alongside the walk into town. Maho Beach (the low-overhead-planespotting beach) is much farther — about 5-11km, roughly 20-35 minutes by taxi or shared minivan.

Main risk
Crowding at the meeting point on multi-ship days
The walk/water-taxi options are both quick and reliable, though the port area itself can feel crowded when several ships are in — give tour meeting points extra time on busy days.
