Why this port matters
Ships dock directly in Heraklion, a genuinely easy walk into the Old Town — Knossos itself is a short, reliable bus or taxi ride away, not walkable.

Heraklion's Old Town is a flat, well-marked 15-20 minute walk from the dock. Knossos is too far to walk (about 5km south) but is a short, frequent bus or taxi ride away.
More details
Ships dock directly at the Port of Heraklion; walking within the working port itself isn't permitted, so a free shuttle covers the short distance to the passenger terminal. From there it's a flat, clearly-marked 15-20 minute walk (about 1.5km) into the Old Town. To reach Knossos, Bus #2 ("the Knossos Express") runs every 15-20 minutes from the bus station just outside the terminal, taking 20-30 minutes each way for €1.20-2. A taxi covers the same distance in about 15 minutes for roughly €15-20 one-way.

None significant — frequent bus and readily available taxis

Recommended visit duration
6-8 hrs comfortably covers Knossos plus the Old Town without rushing
Accessibility
Old Town has pedestrian zones with some uneven cobblestones; Knossos itself involves walking on ancient stone surfaces, which is challenging for wheelchairs/mobility aids.
Crowds
Knossos becomes noticeably busier from mid-morning; an early visit (first hour after docking) is quieter.
